Meet the Maker: XNinexLivesX

Meet this week's maker, Jewlya from XNinexLivesX! A tribute to the scene she grew up in, Jewlya started XNinexLivesX (referencing the English proverb that cats have nine lives) in 2020, after being unable to find alternative pieces for herself and deciding to make her own.

Taking inspiration from her roots in the music community, Jewlya's unique pieces are both edgy and fun!

What kind of products do you sell?
Keychains, vanity sets, jewellery boxes, home decor and kawaii cell phone cases.

How did you get started?
I have always been an artistic person, and was previously involved with creating theatre props and doing makeup for the stage. I always loved working with different mediums to create unique pieces of art. I started by working with different mediums in my basement, until one day a friend said my art was unique, and I shouldn’t just keep it in the basement. I was always inspired by oddities, and it was difficult for me to find, so I began creating my own.

Why are you a maker?
I am a maker because I have an intrinsic need for catharsis. I am an artistic person and genuinely just made items for myself, until I found other people enjoyed similar items. I am a maker because I believe there is soul in a community, and I want to keep that alive.

What inspires you?
Everything from punk rock music, goth aesthetic, underground sub cultures and counter culture to nature, gardening, artistic movements, anime and history. I really valued the music community, especially growing up, where I could be my authentic self and not be judged for being eccentric. I really am inspired by a variety of things that bring duality to the world. Whether it be deadened branches amongst a redden sky on a fall evening, or enjoying an ice cream on a summers day, I find all those things inspiring and beautiful, which is why my work really seems polar opposite.

What is your favourite product that you sell?
I really love my Helena Floral Coffin. I believe it is a unique jewellery box that makes a statement. There are so many different combinations to make unique, but I have to say it offers an elegant and unique flare to a vanity and makes a bold statement.

What is your favourite product that another maker sells?
I love the Punked Bath Bomb by Fresh Essences! I grew up in a time where pop punk aesthetics were very popular, and I always love to see them make an appearance! And it smells so good!

What is your most popular product?
My kitty cat keychains are very popular because they are chic and funky! I also make heart and dog keychains too, but people tend to like the look of the kitties!

What's one fun fact that someone might not know about you?
I drive a massive snow plow truck in the winter! And I always make sure my makeup is done while driving it!
